On Monday, June 18th, a group of Upward Bound writing students at the Kent Campus expanded their writing process through a collaboration with Kent's National Writing Project. Upward Bound students vary in grade levels from 9-12, but all were tasked to focus on a narrative text which could be used for a college application or scholarship essay. The general theme of the paper is "a learning experience" in or out of school that led students to growth and maturity. The group of mentors from the National Writing Project are teachers - grades K-college level. When they heard a group of high school students were composing down the hall, several were eager to act as mentors during the conferencing portion of the writing process. Essentially, conferencing helps students to flesh out and expand ideas, organize thoughts, and add more clarity and detail to writing. All students were able to conference with not only a writing teacher -- but a writer. The result was an in-depth dialogue about what the writing piece means to the student and writing strategies students can hone their writing craft.
